The government is ramping up efforts to expand tertiary education opportunities in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), with a focus on boosting programmes in medical, engineering, and digital fields, President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced during a recent outreach to the region.
Speaking to residents in Skeldon and at the University of Guyana’s Tain Campus, President Ali outlined a comprehensive strategy to ensure that young people in Region Six can access high-quality education without leaving their communities. He emphasized the government’s commitment to investing in the necessary infrastructure and resources to offer degrees in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, engineering, law, and oil and gas right in the region.
“We want our doctors, nurses, lab technicians, pharmacists, and dental technicians for Region Six to come from Region Six,” President Ali stated, highlighting the administration’s goal to train local talent for local needs. He revealed that a team has been tasked with conducting a needs assessment within six weeks to determine what is required to deliver medical degrees and other professional programmes at the regional level.
The expansion of the University of Guyana’s Tain Campus is central to this vision, with plans to develop new laboratories and facilities to support a wider range of academic offerings. Port Mourant is also set to become a technical training hub for Guyana and the wider Caribbean, with the government investing in nursing schools and a hospitality and tourism training institute to support the region’s growing industries.
In addition to physical infrastructure, President Ali announced the imminent launch of the One Guyana Digital School in Region Six, part of a broader initiative to integrate technology into education. The digital school will provide students with 24/7 access to interactive learning platforms, ensuring that even those in remote areas can benefit from high-quality educational resources.
These initiatives are part of a larger development plan aimed at preparing the region’s youth for the demands of a modern, digital economy and supporting the country’s ongoing transformation. President Ali encouraged young people to seize these new opportunities and assured residents that the government is committed to making the necessary investments to secure a brighter future for all in Region Six.
