Georgetown, Guyana – Hundreds of Region Four residents are celebrating after receiving long-awaited house lots during the Ministry of Housing and Water’s latest “Dream Realised†housing drive. The event, held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre in Liliendaal, marked a significant milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to address the housing backlog in the region.
Over two days, a total of 1,600 house lots were allocated to applicants from four East Coast Demerara communities: Success, Felicity, Chateau Margot, and Le Ressouvenir. Many of the beneficiaries had been waiting for years, with some applications dating back to 2019 and earlier.
Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, described the allocations as part of the government’s commitment to addressing housing demand and clearing application backlogs. “We are making 1,600 lots available over two days for allocation,†Rodrigues said. “It’s people who have been waiting for some time, and it’s in keeping with our commitment to bring relief to families.â€
Region Four is the largest region in Guyana and has the highest demand for housing, with approximately 48,000 pending applications. The government has prioritized addressing this demand through accelerated land allocations and infrastructure development. Minister Rodrigues emphasized that these efforts are not just about providing shelter but also about creating opportunities for generational wealth through homeownership.
Many recipients expressed relief and joy at finally receiving their house lots. For some families, this represents an opportunity to build stability and a brighter future. “This is a dream come true for my family,†said one allotee who had been waiting since 2018. “We can now start planning for our home.â€
Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal highlighted that since 2020, over 44,000 house lots have been distributed nationwide, with Region Four receiving a significant share due to its high demand. He assured residents that allottees from this latest drive would be able to access their lands by the end of 2025 as infrastructure works are completed.
Croal also urged patience among residents still awaiting allocations, noting that every concern and application is being addressed systematically. “We see about 300 persons every day at the ministry for new applications, follow-ups, or queries,†he stated. “We are working tirelessly to ensure everyone gets their chance.â€
The government remains on track to surpass its ambitious target of allocating 50,000 house lots by the end of 2025. With continued investments in housing developments across Guyana, thousands more families are expected to benefit from similar initiatives in the months ahead.
For Region Four residents who have endured years of waiting, this week’s allocations mark a new beginning—a chance to turn dreams of homeownership into reality.
