President Dr. Irfaan Ali has announced that Phase II of the transformative Silica City project will be launched within weeks, with a special focus on attracting investments from the Guyanese diaspora. The announcement was made during a community meeting in Region Three, where the president outlined plans to involve overseas Guyanese in the development of Guyana’s first sustainable and technologically advanced city.
Silica City, located along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, is envisioned as a modern urban hub designed to accommodate 15,000 families while prioritizing environmental sustainability, wellness, and technological innovation. President Ali described the project as more than just a city—it is a lifestyle initiative aimed at extending life expectancy through advanced infrastructure and a focus on mental health and self-sufficiency.
During his address, President Ali emphasized the opportunities available for diaspora investors in Phase II. He encouraged overseas Guyanese to participate by building malls, apartment complexes, and homes within the city. “This phase will be opened up within two weeks for diaspora investments. You can come there, build your hall, build your apartment complex, and own your homes,” he stated.
Phase I of Silica City has already seen significant progress, with construction underway for 110 young professional homes. The first phase also includes smart homes equipped with energy-saving technologies for wastewater management, energy conservation, and water management. Recreational parks, community centers, a multi-specialty health facility, and shopping complexes are among the amenities planned for the city’s development.
The government has earmarked 3,800 acres of land for Silica City’s infrastructure works and invested approximately $2.1 billion in its initial phase. Beyond residential developments, the city will feature high-end facilities designed to support both social and economic growth.
Silica City forms part of Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) and reflects the government’s commitment to climate change mitigation through sustainable urban planning. The project has garnered international interest, with experts from India, Singapore, and South Korea contributing to its urban design and development strategies.
As Phase II prepares to launch, President Ali reiterated his administration’s efforts to encourage diaspora engagement not only in Silica City but across various sectors of Guyana’s economy. The initiative aligns with broader government policies aimed at fostering inclusive growth and creating wealth-building opportunities for all Guyanese citizens.
With its innovative design and focus on sustainability, Silica City is poised to become a landmark development that reshapes urban living in Guyana while strengthening ties with the global Guyanese community.
