Georgetown, Guyana – The Government of Guyana has announced a $40 million investment in the fisheries sector along the Corentyne Coast, aimed at expanding aquaculture production and enhancing the livelihoods of coastal communities. The project forms part of the administration’s broader strategy to modernize the fisheries industry and reduce Guyana’s reliance on imported seafood.
The initiative will focus on developing brackish water shrimp farming, a niche but lucrative segment of the aquaculture industry. The funds will be used to construct and upgrade shrimp ponds, introduce modern farming technologies, and provide training for local farmers in sustainable aquaculture practices. This effort builds on earlier successes in the region, where shrimp production has increased significantly due to government support and partnerships with international organizations.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha highlighted the importance of the project during a recent visit to the Corentyne region. “This $40 million investment is not just about increasing production; it’s about creating jobs, improving food security, and ensuring that our fisheries sector remains competitive in regional and global markets,” he said.
The project also includes infrastructure upgrades such as improved drainage and irrigation systems to support aquaculture operations. Additionally, farmers will receive technical assistance in areas like pond management, post-harvest handling, and marketing strategies to maximize profitability.
The Corentyne fisheries project is expected to benefit hundreds of families who rely on fishing and aquaculture for their livelihoods. It also aligns with Guyana’s commitment to achieving CARICOM’s goal of reducing the region’s food import bill by 25% by 2025.
Local farmers have welcomed the initiative, noting that it addresses longstanding challenges such as fluctuating yields due to climate change and outdated farming methods. Suedat Persaud, a veteran shrimp farmer from Fyrish Village, expressed optimism about the project’s potential. “With this level of support, we can increase our production and access new markets, both locally and internationally,” he said.
The government’s investment in fisheries is part of a larger push to diversify Guyana’s economy beyond oil and gas. By strengthening traditional sectors like agriculture and fisheries, policymakers aim to create a balanced development model that benefits all citizens.
