Willemstad, Curaçao – The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has bolstered its regional defence partnerships following a successful three-day visit to Curaçao. Led by Colonel General Staff, Captain (Coast Guard) Vernon Burnett, the delegation engaged in high-level discussions and joint exercises aimed at enhancing cooperation with the Netherlands Forces in the Caribbean (NLFORCARIB) and the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard (DCCG).
Hosted by Rear Admiral Walter Hansen, Commander of NLFORCARIB and Director of the DCCG, the visit focused on shared security priorities such as territorial integrity, combating transnational crime, and disaster response. Senior officers from the GDF’s Coast Guard, Air Corps, and Planning Branch participated in briefings and strategic discussions to explore avenues for deeper collaboration.
The visit included tours of key military facilities such as Navy Base Parera, Her Netherlands Majesty’s Ship (HNLMS) Pelikaan, DCCG aviation units, and the Western Atlantic Coastal Operations Area (WACAO) live-firing training zone. One of the highlights was a high-speed sailing exercise through the port of Willemstad, which demonstrated advanced maritime techniques and operational readiness.
According to Colonel Burnett, the visit reinforced mutual commitments to regional stability and paved the way for future joint initiatives. “This engagement strengthens our ability to collaborate effectively on pressing security matters while building trust and interoperability between our forces,” he noted.
The partnership aims to address challenges such as piracy, human trafficking, and natural disaster preparedness—issues that are increasingly relevant in the Caribbean region. The discussions also laid the groundwork for joint military exercises, forums, and bilateral training programs designed to enhance operational capabilities on both sides.
As Guyana continues to expand its defence relationships globally, this visit underscores the importance of regional alliances in maintaining security and stability. The GDF’s proactive approach to fostering international cooperation reflects its commitment to safeguarding Guyana’s interests while contributing to broader Caribbean security efforts.
