The University of Guyana (UG) has officially commissioned its new US$4.576 million College of Medical Sciences building, marking a transformative milestone in medical education and healthcare training in the country. The state-of-the-art facility, located at the Turkeyen Campus, was inaugurated on April 1, 2025, by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali.
The project, funded through a partnership between the Government of Guyana and the World Bank under the Guyana Education Sector Improvement Plan (GESIP), represents a significant investment in higher education and human capital development. It was conceptualized in 2013, with construction beginning in earnest in 2021 and the official sod-turning taking place in 2023.
The new building is equipped with cutting-edge laboratories and classrooms designed to enhance hands-on learning and research. Among its features are a Microbiology Laboratory with a wet prep room, an Anatomy Laboratory for cadaveric studies, a Haematological and Biochemistry Laboratory for specialized testing, a Research Laboratory for medical innovation, and a Skills Laboratory for clinical training. Additionally, the facility includes eight modern classrooms to support interactive and student-centered learning.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Ali emphasized the importance of integrating advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and digital innovation into healthcare education. He highlighted the need to prepare students for emerging medical advancements, including robotic-assisted surgeries and AI-driven diagnostics.
Vice Chancellor Professor Paloma Mohamed-Martin reflected on the decade-long journey to bring this project to fruition. She noted that the facility’s completion will allow UG to expand its enrolment capacity and clinical training programs while meeting international standards in medical education.
This modern facility is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing local healthcare challenges while preparing graduates for global opportunities. It aligns with Guyana’s broader strategy to modernize education, strengthen healthcare services, and build a workforce equipped for future challenges.
