Strathspey, Guyana – The Ministry of Public Works has announced the construction of a new concrete bridge to replace the collapsed structure along the Railway Embankment at Strathspey, East Coast Demerara. The project, which commenced last Thursday, will require a 70-day closure of the affected area to facilitate the removal of the old bridge and the construction of its replacement.
The work is being executed by China Railway First Group (CRFG), a firm tasked with ensuring the timely and safe completion of the new bridge. The collapse of the previous structure had caused significant disruptions, prompting swift action from authorities to address safety concerns and restore connectivity in the area.
To manage traffic during the closure, motorists traveling eastbound are being redirected to use Coldingen Road before merging onto the main East Coast Road. Westbound drivers are advised to detour via Bladen Hall School Road and other designated access routes, including Buxton and Annandale Access Roads. Traffic ranks have been deployed to assist with managing vehicle flow and ensuring public safety during this period.
Public Works Minister Bishop Juan Edghill visited the site following the collapse and assured residents that all necessary measures are in place to minimize inconvenience while expediting construction. He urged commuters to exercise patience and adhere to detour instructions to avoid delays and ensure safety.
The new bridge is expected to significantly improve transportation along the Railway Embankment once completed, aligning with ongoing infrastructure upgrades in Strathspey and surrounding communities. These efforts form part of a broader government initiative to enhance road networks and connectivity across Guyana.
As construction progresses, residents and commuters eagerly await the completion of the new bridge, which promises to restore normalcy and improve access in this vital corridor.
