Doerga’s Apology: Upholding Guyana’s New River Triangle Sovereignty

    Published on

Dr. Vishnu Doerga, Chairman of the Suriname Guyana Chamber of Commerce:

I would like to address the concerns that have been raised regarding the map presented by an invited speaker during their PowerPoint presentation at the recent International Business Conference held in Paramaribo. The IBC was a significant success, fostering economic progress for both Guyana and Suriname.

I want to clarify that the New River Triangle is unequivocally recognized as part of Guyana’s sovereign territory under international law. This matter is primarily one between governments, and both nations are dedicated to maintaining a strong and collaborative relationship, rooted in mutual respect and adherence to international law. We will continue to engage in discussions through the established channels aimed at resolving outstanding border issues.

On February 9, 2025, the Suriname Guyana Chamber of Commerce released a statement emphasizing that no map was distributed to the conference attendees. We stressed the importance of diplomacy and mutual respect in all interactions. Additionally, we have implemented measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
