Police in Berbice continue their search for Avinesh Naidoo, the driver implicated in a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of nine-month-old Eli Surujnarine. The tragic incident occurred on March 2, 2025, along the Line Path Public Road in Corentyne, Berbice.
On the evening of the accident, Eli’s father, 17-year-old Tushan Surujnarine, was riding an electric cycle with his wife, 19-year-old Kavita Bedsan, and their baby as pillion riders. The family was struck from behind by a white Fielder wagon driven by Naidoo, causing severe injuries. The impact was so severe that it pitched the trio about 50 feet from the point of impact.
Despite immediate medical attention, Eli succumbed to her injuries while being transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Her parents were seriously injured and remain hospitalized. Initially, reports indicated that only the baby had died, but subsequent updates revealed that Kavita Bedsan also lost her life due to injuries sustained in the accident.
The vehicle involved in the accident, with registration number HV 8905, was located at the home of its owner, Vidawattie Arjune, in Crabwood Creek. Arjune is cooperating with the police investigation. However, efforts to apprehend Naidoo have been unsuccessful, and his whereabouts remain unknown.
The family of the victims has expressed deep grief and outrage over the incident, calling for justice and urging the public to assist in locating the driver. The grandmother of the baby has appealed to the community to help bring Naidoo to justice, emphasizing the devastating impact of the accident on their family. The police continue to investigate and are working to ensure that Naidoo is held accountable for his actions.
