The Collapse of Hinterland Development Under APNU/AFC Rule

    Published on

The tenure of the APNU/AFC coalition government in Guyana, from 2015 to 2020, was marked by significant neglect and mismanagement of hinterland development. Despite promises to prioritize the region, the coalition’s policies and actions led to a decline in infrastructure, economic opportunities, and social services in these areas.

    Neglect of Indigenous Communities

One of the most notable failures was the slashing of Amerindian Development Funds, which are crucial for supporting Indigenous communities. This reduction in funding led to the abandonment of vital projects and the discontinuation of land titling initiatives, exacerbating the economic and social challenges faced by these communities.

    Economic Decline

The APNU/AFC government’s economic policies had a devastating impact on the hinterland regions. The agriculture sector, which is a backbone of the local economy, suffered from poor management and lack of investment. This resulted in a decline in agricultural production and employment opportunities, further impoverishing rural communities.

    Infrastructure Neglect

Infrastructure development in the hinterland was severely neglected during the APNU/AFC rule. Major roads, bridges, and airstrips fell into disrepair, hindering access to basic services and economic opportunities. This neglect not only affected local residents but also impeded national economic development by limiting access to the region’s rich natural resources.

Lack of Investment in Social Services

Healthcare services in the hinterland deteriorated due to underinvestment and corrupt procurement practices. This led to medicine shortages and poorly maintained facilities, further compromising the health and well-being of residents.

    Political Instability and Corruption

The APNU/AFC government’s tenure was marred by political instability and corruption. The coalition’s handling of the 2020 elections and its disregard for democratic norms eroded public trust and exacerbated the challenges faced by hinterland communities.

    Legacy of Failure

The collapse of hinterland development under APNU/AFC rule serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of poor governance and neglect. The current government has been working to reverse these trends by investing in infrastructure, agriculture, and social services, aiming to restore economic vitality and improve living standards in these regions.
