In a significant development for the mining and logging village of Kwakwani in Region Ten, Guyana, Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill has announced the construction of a new $248 million airstrip. This project aims to enhance access to the area, addressing existing concerns that have deterred some airlines from operating there.
The contract for the construction and asphaltic paving of the facility has been awarded to Associated Construction Services. The airstrip will be 2,500 feet long and 50 feet wide, with works scheduled to be completed within five months.
Minister Edghill emphasized that the construction process will include laying a base before asphaltic paving to ensure the durability and longevity of the airstrip’s surface. This approach is similar to road construction methods used to strengthen infrastructure.
In addition to the airstrip, the Ministry of Public Works is also rehabilitating community landings and revetments from De Velde to Hururu. Concrete footpaths will be built from these landings to schools, health centers, and other main facilities, with the construction being executed by local residents.
The project is part of broader efforts to improve infrastructure in Kwakwani, where all roads are currently being upgraded by small contractors from the area. These initiatives are expected to be completed by April and are designed to enhance the quality of life for residents by providing better access to essential services.
Minister Edghill highlighted the government’s commitment to delivering tangible improvements in the lives of Guyanese citizens, emphasizing that these projects demonstrate a genuine effort to improve livelihoods beyond mere promises.
