President Ali Emphasizes Women’s Role in Guyana’s Future: Calls for Respect and Gratitude from Men

    Published on

In a powerful address on International Women’s Day 2025, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali underscored the indispensable role women play in shaping Guyana’s future, declaring that without them, “we will be future-less.” Speaking at the launch of the Newborn Cash Grant initiative, President Ali urged men to acknowledge, celebrate, and support the women in their lives, not just on this special day but every day.

    Women’s Contributions to National Development

President Ali highlighted the significant contributions women make to Guyana’s development across various sectors. In agriculture, women now own and lead 65% of new agribusinesses under the Agriculture Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme, surpassing initial targets. At the Guyana School of Agriculture, women comprised 50% of the latest graduating class, demonstrating their growing presence in traditionally male-dominated fields.

In education, women are leading the way, with over 4,000 of the 4,600 newly trained teachers being female. Additionally, nearly 10,000 of the 14,000 University of Guyana graduates in recent years have been women, reflecting their profound impact on the nation’s educational landscape.

    Government Initiatives for Women’s Empowerment

The government has invested over $156 billion in women’s empowerment initiatives, including education and economic opportunities. Programs like the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) have seen women constitute the majority of its cohorts, providing them with essential skills for personal and professional growth.

Furthermore, the Women in Agriculture Initiative and the part-time jobs program have empowered thousands of women to contribute meaningfully to the economy and achieve financial stability.

    Addressing Gender-Based Violence

President Ali also emphasized the government’s commitment to eradicating gender-based violence, which he described as a scourge undermining women’s safety and dignity. Initiatives such as the Spotlight Initiative and a strengthened legal framework aim to provide greater support and protection for abused women and girls.

    Call to Action for Men

In his address, President Ali made a heartfelt appeal to men, urging them to respect, uplift, and protect the women in their lives. He stressed that women should not have to fight for recognition or fair treatment but should be honored, celebrated, and given every opportunity to succeed.

The President emphasized that men have a duty to safeguard the foundation that women provide for society, ensuring that they are nurtured and protected. This call for action reflects a broader societal shift towards greater respect and gratitude for women’s contributions.

In summary, President Ali’s message on International Women’s Day 2025 underscored the critical role women play in Guyana’s future. As the country continues to advance gender equality and empower women, it is clear that their contributions are indispensable to national progress and development.
