Oil, Agriculture, and Marine Biology Take Center Stage at UG Open Day

    Published on

The University of Guyana’s recent Open Day and Job Fair has underscored the increasing interest among Guyanese youth in critical sectors such as oil and gas, agriculture, and marine biology. The two-day event, held at the Turkeyen Campus and later at the Berbice Campus, attracted thousands of students and prospective graduates, offering them a unique opportunity to engage with some of Guyana’s largest businesses and explore diverse career paths.

    Oil and Gas Sector Engagement

ExxonMobil, a major player in Guyana’s oil and gas industry, drew significant attention with its booth, highlighting the diverse career opportunities available beyond traditional science and engineering roles. Community Relations Adviser Tameca Sukhdeo-Singh emphasized that while recruitment was not the primary focus at the event, educating young people about the sector’s vast support services was crucial. This outreach reflects the industry’s growing need for skilled professionals across various disciplines, from operations management to environmental sustainability.

    Agricultural Interest

The National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) also witnessed substantial interest, particularly in laboratory work. Research Technician Stephan Seeraj noted that many visitors inquired about career opportunities and submitted job applications on the spot. This enthusiasm highlights the enduring appeal of agriculture among Guyanese youth, who see it as a vital sector for national development and personal career growth.

Marine Biology and Its Growing Relevance

The University of Guyana’s Natural Sciences Department attracted long lines of attendees eager to explore its live exhibits, with a particular focus on marine biology. Faculty members and students emphasized the growing demand for marine specialists, especially given the oil and gas industry’s expansion and its impact on marine ecosystems. This interest underscores the importance of interdisciplinary education that combines marine sciences with other fields like environmental management and conservation.

    Corporate and Government Participation

Companies such as Banks DIH Limited conducted on-the-spot interviews, offering immediate employment opportunities. Sonya Forrester, Training and Communication Personnel at Banks DIH, highlighted the impressive turnout and the numerous applications received during the event. Other notable participants included Halliburton LMP Guyana, SBM Offshore Guyana, and multiple government ministries, further demonstrating the event’s success in connecting students with potential career paths.

    Impact on University Engagement

The Open Day and Job Fair served as a pivotal event in fostering engagement and influencing enrollment decisions. By providing prospective students with a firsthand experience of campus life and academic offerings, the University of Guyana reinforced its position as a hub for education and career development in Guyana. The event’s success underscores the importance of such initiatives in shaping the university experience and aligning educational programs with the needs of the country’s rapidly evolving economy.

In summary, the University of Guyana’s Open Day and Job Fair has highlighted the growing interest in key sectors such as oil and gas, agriculture, and marine biology. As Guyana continues to develop its economy and address the challenges of these sectors, events like these play a crucial role in connecting students with career opportunities and fostering a skilled workforce that can drive national growth.
