ExxonMobil Unveils Ambitious Plans to Boost Guyana’s Natural Gas Production

    Published on

In a significant move that could reshape Guyana’s energy landscape, ExxonMobil has outlined comprehensive plans to ramp up natural gas production in the South American nation. The announcement, made by ExxonMobil Guyana’s country manager Alistair Routledge at the Guyana Energy Conference in Georgetown, marks a pivotal shift in the company’s strategy for the oil-rich country.

The centerpiece of ExxonMobil’s new initiative is the “Wales Gas Vision,” a concept that aims to harness gas from the company’s Longtail development for onshore industrial use. This ambitious project could see gas production reach up to 1.2 billion cubic feet per day by 2029, pending a final investment decision expected next year.

“We’re ready to deliver gas onshore to that very first domestic gas project that will deliver real benefits to Guyana,” Routledge stated, highlighting the company’s commitment to the country’s energy future.

The Wales Gas Vision is designed to support a range of industrial applications, including fertilizer and alumina production, as well as powering data centers. This diversification aligns with the Guyanese government’s push for increased gas utilization in onshore energy and petrochemical projects.

ExxonMobil’s plans extend beyond domestic use, with the company exploring options for international gas exports. While a pipeline to nearby Trinidad was deemed “cost prohibitive,” Routledge mentioned the possibility of using liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology to connect Guyana’s gas resources to global markets.

The announcement comes as ExxonMobil prepares for a “pivotal” year in 2025, with several major projects in the pipeline. The company recently submitted a draft environmental impact assessment for the Hammerhead project, which could add up to 190,000 barrels per day of oil production by late 2029.

Guyana’s Energy Minister Vickram Bharrat emphasized the country’s readiness for commercial gas projects, announcing plans to launch a national gas strategy this year. The government is set to receive a portion of the gas from ExxonMobil’s Stabroek Block, with U.S.-based Fulcrum LNG developing an offshore gas processing and LNG facility.

As Guyana continues its rapid ascent as a major oil producer, these natural gas initiatives represent a significant step towards diversifying its energy portfolio. With ExxonMobil’s fourth floating oil production facility set to begin operations in the third quarter of 2025, the country is poised to become a key player in both oil and gas markets.

The coming years will be crucial for ExxonMobil and Guyana as they navigate the complexities of developing a robust natural gas sector. As Routledge acknowledged, “We want to move quickly, but for those in the industry, you will understand the additional complexity and challenges that gas brings.”

As Guyana stands on the brink of a new era in its energy sector, the world will be watching closely to see how this small nation leverages its vast resources to fuel economic growth and development.
