The much-anticipated Candy Boss & Di Antics 8-A-Side Knockout Football Tournament burst into life on Friday night at the All Saints Ground, Princess Elizabeth Road, New Amsterdam, with three keenly- contested matches signalling the official start of the eighth edition of the annual competition.
A healthy crowd turned out for the opening night as teams battled for early momentum in a tournament that features 16 teams competing for more than $2 million in cash and prizes.
The night opened with Cougars edging Kildonan 2-1 in an entertaining contest that set the tone for the evening. Cougars showed greater composure in key moments, capitalising on their chances to secure a hard-fought win and book their place in the next round.
The second game proved to be the most dramatic of the night, as Paradise advanced on penalties over Fyrish, winning 3-2 from the spot after regulation time ended goalless. Fyrish delivered a courageous performance against one of the tournament favourites, Paradise, despite starting the match with only nine players. They absorbed sustained pressure in the early stages and, after eventually fielding a tenth player, began to turn the tide with more attacking intent.

However, despite Fyrish bringing their A-plus game and Paradise mounting a relentless assault, neither side could find the breakthrough. After 90 minutes, referee Colin Bowrey signalled the end of regulation time with the score still locked at 0-0, sending the contest to penalties where Paradise held their nerve to progress.
In the final game of the night, Ithaca recorded a solid 2 0 victory over Cougars B. Neil Linton opened the scoring in the first half, giving Ithaca an early advantage. The result was sealed when skipper Royan Solomon calmly converted from the penalty spot after referee Michael Erskine awarded a spot-kick for an infringement inside the box.
The tournament was scheduled to resume on Sunday at the All Saints Ground with another triple-header, as Pele took on Airy Hall, Victoria Kings faced U21 Monedderlust, and Trafalgar clashed with Young Strikes, as teams continue their quest for knockout glory.
With high-quality football already on display and several heavyweight clashes ahead, the Candy Boss & Di Antics 8-A-Side Knockout is shaping up to be another thrilling edition for football fans in New Amsterdam and across Berbice.
