The construction of the Kumaka and Morawhanna Stellings in Region One is progressing and is set to improve transportation for local residents. As of Friday, the Ministry of Public Works announced that the Kumaka Stelling, with a budget of $891.5 million, is currently 45% complete. The passenger terminal, aimed at providing greater comfort and convenience, is nearing completion at 90%, while the storage bond stands at 80% completion. The stelling itself is at 20% completion, with 200 out of the 335 necessary piles already manufactured and 60 driven into place.
R. Bassoo & Son Construction Company is overseeing the project, which is expected to be finished by April 8, 2025. Meanwhile, the Morawhanna Stelling, which has a budget of $1.9 billion, is 25% complete and is also being constructed by the same contractor. They have requested a 270-day extension, pushing the new completion date to May 17, 2025.
These projects are part of the government’s broader initiative to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic activity in Region One by modernizing river transport. In the 2025 budget, $9.9 billion has been allocated to improve river transportation, focusing on safety, efficiency, and sustainability. A significant portion of this funding will go towards refurbishing ferries such as the MV Makouria, MV Malali, MV Kanawan, and MV Sabanto, in addition to upgrading the Kingston Goods Wharf and stellings in Bartica, Kumaka, and Port Kaituma. The government also plans to acquire new wooden cargo boats for the Pomeroon, Berbice, and Northwest channels to bolster capacity.
