The co-leader of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), David Hinds, has once again demonstrated a penchant for divisive politics through a disturbing exhibition of racism. His recent comments directed at Afro-Guyanese who support the incumbent government are not only profoundly offensive but also indicative of the toxic attitudes prevalent in certain political factions in Guyana. Hinds’ use of derogatory terms such as “lick bottoms” and “house slaves” to refer to his fellow Afro-Guyanese reflects a troubling trend in the opposition’s use of racism as a tool for political gain. Such language is entirely unacceptable and contradicts the principles of unity and democracy that Guyana strives to uphold.
Minister Kwame McCoy’s denunciation of Hinds’ remarks is timely and represents a necessary step towards addressing this issue. He rightly emphasizes that every citizen of Guyana, regardless of race, has the constitutional right to support any political organization of their choosing. The opposition’s apparent assumption that it can hold Afro-Guyanese hostage to its failed policies and corrupt leadership is not only misguided but also an affront to the intelligence and dignity of the Guyanese people.
It is important to recognize that this is not an isolated incident. The WPA, under the influence of figures like Hinds, has consistently employed language that incites ethnic animosity. This behavior diverges significantly from the ideals championed by Walter Rodney, the party’s founder. The current leadership of the WPA has strayed far from its foundational principles, opting instead for a divisive political strategy that threatens social harmony in Guyanese society.
In stark contrast, the “One Guyana” vision promoted by the PPP/C administration offers a refreshing alternative, advocating for unity, inclusivity, and transformation—values that are essential for our progress during this unprecedented period of potential. Guyana stands at a pivotal juncture, and it is vital for all citizens, across diverse ethno-racial backgrounds, to unite against those forces that seek to sow discord among us.
The politics of racial division have no place in contemporary Guyana. It is imperative for all Guyanese to transcend such toxic rhetoric and embrace a future grounded in respect, understanding, and collective progress.
