CAMERON Green has had a tough start to the year. With a back surgery late last year, rehab meant the Australian all-rounder missed a major chunk of cricket in 2024 and 2025.
Having returned to competitive cricket two months ago in the World Test Championship Final and surviving ‘unscathed’ in the Frank Worrell Trophy, the all-rounder has sights firmly set for The Ashes later this year.
With the pitches in the Tests in the West Indies heavily assisting the bowlers, Green still averaged 30.67 and was the third highest run-scorer across the three Tests. But the all-rounder felt that there wasn’t enough to take away from the series due to the vastly different conditions.
“I don’t think we’ll be playing on many wickets quite like that (in The Ashes), so I don’t think there’s too many takeaways,” said Green. “It was such a tough wicket, especially for the batters, to try and get out of the series unscathed was a good effort.”
With The Ashes opener three months away, Green is eyeing up a stint with Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield to bolster his preparations ahead of the Australian summer. The all-rounder also believes that it would be a way for him to get back to bowling, something he hasn’t done since he returned to competitive cricket in June.
“In the past, it’s worked really well when I’ve focused on Shield cricket. That potentially might be the way to go, especially with (me) working my way back to bowling, to potentially get a few more overs over a few more days.”
Green was uncertain in which game he would finally return to bowling but labelled the journey exciting after the long injury lay-off earlier this year.
“I’m not quite certain on what match (his return to bowling) is, but I’m feeling really good and I’m in a really good spot. “It’s just really exciting. It’s been a long road back.”
