WICUA President Optimistic About Upcoming Exchange Program’s Success

    Published on

Vivian Johnson, the President of the West Indies Cricket Umpires Association (WICUA), recently announced an exciting new exchange program among member territories, with the USA and Jamaica poised to welcome umpires from other regions. This announcement was made during his address at the annual luncheon of the Canada Cricket Umpires Association (CCUA), which took place at Windies Restaurant & Sports Bar in Scarborough, Ontario, on Sunday.

During his speech, Johnson expressed his optimism regarding the success of the program and encouraged CCUA members to actively participate. The exchange initiative is designed primarily for non-panel members, with each territory required to submit two umpires to the organizing committee. These selections will be rotated on a two-year basis.

Furthermore, each territory must inform the WICUA Secretary about their cricket season’s start and end dates, as this information is vital for the organizing committee to coordinate the exchange effectively. In a recent announcement, the WICUA stated that a stipend will be provided to assist umpires with travel costs, with the exact amount to be determined by the organization. The WICUA will also oversee and evaluate all reports related to these assignments.

The WICUA emphasized that this new policy will establish a structured framework and data bank, clarifying responsibilities and promoting a successful, collaborative exchange program within the region. This initiative aims to offer educational opportunities and foster a more unified organization.

At the recent luncheon, which also honored several CCUA members and those who completed the TV Umpiring Course in Atlanta last year, Johnson highlighted the significance of the certificates earned, comparing their value to that of a PhD for umpires.

He also commended CCUA President Azad Khan on his appointment as Honorary Secretary of the WICUA, noting that it is a significant responsibility that requires dedication. Johnson praised Khan’s proactive approach and the excellent work he has been doing.

Additionally, Johnson encouraged members to attend the upcoming WICUA Convention scheduled for July 12-19 in Trinidad & Tobago, emphasizing that it provides a great opportunity to escape the winter weather currently being experienced. He also mentioned that the WICUA Training Committee is working on training trainers from various territorial boards to better equip them for their roles. (Frederick Halley)
